One of the most amazing aspects of Italy is the artwork and the architecture. It seemed like every church, from St. Peter's Basilica to the small-town chapel, was designed by an artist with a truly divine focus. I would recommend the following cities: Rome/Vatican City, Florence, Assisi, and Siena. I've been to Milan, but it is much more cosmopolitan, so there aren't many historical sites there worth seeing. Friends who have been to Pisa say that it's not really worth it, unless you have an overwhelming urge to see the Leaning Tower. I have heard mixed opinions on Venice, but I haven't actually been there. Oh, and the advertising in the big cities, such as Rome and Florence, can be a bit racy (the smaller towns, such as Siena and Assisi, tend to be much cleaner in this regard).

I would strongly suggest against getting a rental car--the traffic there is ridiculous. Even walking across the street in Rome is a risky art (hint: simply watch when the natives walk across, and then follow their lead). You'll find it much easier to use the public transportation, both for inter-city and intra-city travel. Finally, always watch your wallets/purses; the pickpockets there are experts in taking advantage of inattentive tourists.

All that being said, save room for dessert; a daily helping of gelato is a great treat!

When are you going? For how long?
What are you general interests?
The best is to move around by train, driving??? no...if you are a foreigner some Italian cities are like hell...;-)

Art wise: Rome Florence Venice, if you have time go to the South, Sicily is just incredible

If you a fond of good food, the best places are in the center and south of Italy

Enjoy! ;-))

Look it up on Yahoo travel. They have people's input on what they liked and where they went on past trips there.

Have fun! Italy is a lovely country with great people, wonderful food and way too much to see in a short time.

Venice is a must see for sure. I've never been to a more beautiful, intriguing town. The town is sinking so a lot of the roads are under water. You get around on these boat taxis. You can buy tickets that allow you all day access to these.

There is so much culture there! There are parts of the city that are not under water. If you walk around, you'll find these quaint little cafe's tucked away in little back alleys where you can eat authentic Italien food...yum!

St. Mark's Cathedral is amazing.

Go for a gondola ride if you can.

Oh...and don't forget to get Italien ice cream (gelato). It's to die for!!

Hope you can make it there. I promise you won't be disappointed!
