Study it in Italy where programs are total immersion. |

GO TO ITALY!
If you want to become very good in Italian find a school in a smaller town, like Orvietto, where you will be forced to use your Italian. If you are starting from scratch and have the time and money, allow three months. |

Immersion is the best way.... If you can afford to go to Italy and take courses, it would be great. There you would be forced to speak the language.
I would give yourself 3 months....
You could also take classes here in the states. Buy the cds --Rosetta Stone to get started. Join Italian forums... Get involved in things related to Italy. |

Study it in Italy because immersion is the best way to learn a language. I would set aside AT LEAST 3 - 6 months, depending on how good you are with languages. That way you can experience the culture and get practice using it on a daily basis. |
