Very beautiful area of Italy. I would certainly recommend a day in Verona as well as Venice. The amphitheatre in Verona is, to my mind, much nicer than the one in Rome even though it's quite a bit smaller. The Romeo and Juliet courtyard is nice too, even if it's not really historic (Romeo and Juliet being fictional characters, of course). Another interesting historical site near lake Garda (if you're staying on the eastern shore) is Rivoli where Napoleon defeated the Austrians in 1797 in what was his greatest victory to date and ensure French occupation of northern Italy. The fortified town of Sirmione on a peninsula at the southern end of the lake is beautiful, and I recommend a boat ride in one of the rowing boats or small motor launches which can be taken from there. I hope you have a wonderful holiday, I loved it. Oh, and be prepared to go on a diet when you get home, the food is divine! |

Whereabouts in Lake Garda are you staying?
I stayed in Desenzano. The whole area is simply amazing. The train goes straight from Desenzano to Venice and takes around 2 hours each way. We left at around 9am and had pretty much a full day there. It was great, I'd go back in a flash.
Try and get up to the top of the lakes too, where Italy borders Germany and Austria. And make sure you go up Monte Baldo for the breathtaking views.
Hope you have a nice time! I certainly did. |

Until ten years ago my family still had a villa in Sirmione on Lake Garda. The train is about two hours to Venice. Lake Garda is a gorgeous area. Sirmione is situated on the tip of a peninsula on Lake Garda and you enter the town thru a 600 year old castle. It's a wonderful town to wander around in. There are upscale shops; the Terme spa and Roman ruins to explore. Take the boat/ferry to all the other towns on Garda.........get off and explore........be sure to take the lift to the top of Montebaldo, the views are spectacular!!!! You'll just have a day in Venice, but you'll be able to hit the highlights.....St Mark's Square, Doge's Palace, take a gondola ride, ride the #1 vaporetto ( water taxi) to get an inexpensive view and journey down the Grand Canal. If you want a fantastic view, although expensive lunch, go to the rooftoop terrace restaurant at the famous hotel Danieli which is near the Bridge of Sighs. You'll have INCREDIBLE views of Venice. Otherwise, I'd just go to an outdoor cafe in St Mark's Square and enjoy the free show of people watching. Have a wonderful trip. We're heading back to Italy again soon and I can't wait! |

I've been there many times cause I live between lake Garda and Venice. The trip by train lasts about 2 hours. You can start from Desenzano or Peschiera and you arrive in Venezia S. Lucia. Have a good time here in Italy! |

No, but I'm guessing you wouldn't want to drink the water. Sounds too close to Giardia. |
