You'll love it. The one thing I didn't know before going in is that the Uffizi museum requires you to reserve tickets ahead of time:

Oh, and parking really, really sucks so take public transportation into the city and save yourself the headache.

Florence is a small town but is so beautiful. I actually like it better than Roma. People in Florence are a lot more friendly, nice, willing to help, etc. This is the perfect place to do shopping, everything is cheaper than in Rome.
One thing for sure is I would not drive in Florence. Parking seems to be definitely an issue. The streets are so narrow there is barely room for a car (a narrow european car), i am just too claustrophobic.
Florence is definitely the place to go, I actually like it better than Venice as well (water smells bad and gondola rides are expensive). anyway, enjoy.

Florence is the Philadelphia of Italy...historic, but decrepit. You'd be better served to spend your time in some of Florence's less famous neighbors - Sienna, Volterra, Arezzo and Moltepulciano spring to mind.

I actually suggest taking the time to shop in Florence. The leather shops are amazing, but make sure you go to one that isn't just trying to rip off tourists. I spent an entire day shopping in the quaint shops and had so much fun bargaining at several flea markets around the city. Being American, I was a little culture-shocked after arriving there from Rome. The streets are definitely not as clean or as big as Rome (it is hard to get lost in Florence if you at least keep track of where you're going), but I absolutely loved it because it reminded me of New York City. Have fun!

I've been to Flocerence a couple of weeks ago. I love that it's very peaceful. Also the duomo and the ponte vecchio are amazing. Try to go to the ponte vecchio at 9 in the morning cause the shops look like treasure chests.

Florence is a beautiful city and the people are friendly. I'm sure you'll have a good time.
One counsel: don't spend any time to shop! The stuff that you can buy in Florence you can buy wheresoever so spend your time to visit the city.

First of all, it is hot in July, usually around in the high 80s-90s F, so wear light clothing The streets are all cobble stones so wear comfortable shoes. Its a small city but can easily get lost in. No need to rent a car or get a taxi. You can go around everywhere on foot. The people are nice over there and they can somewhat speak english, so it won't be too hard communicating. Definitely visit the Uffizi museum and the Duomo, so beautiful! To go shopping, you can check out the San Lorenzo flea market and for jewelry you can go to the Ponte Vecchio. You must try the Gelato! They're so delicious. Have fun!
