Hi Sara,

I go to Italy every year, and have done so for the past 20 years. In fact, I will be there for 5 months this year.

Italy is a wonderful place that has a tremendous amount to offer for such a small country. In fact, you could go there as a tourist for 10 years and see new things every day without ever scratching the surface of what Italy has to offer.

Everyone that has experienced it in depth has their own favorite things. Some dream about the sunflower fields and rolling hills of Tuscany, while others are taken back to the beauty of the Canals of Venice. Others still prefer the unspoiled nature of Umbria, while some love the hustle and bustle of Rome, or Milan, which is Italy's fashion capital.

For me, Italy isn't about the places. Instead it is about the people and the wonderful culture. Italian culture is warm and animated. There is nothing in the world quite like sitting on the terrace of a 300 year old villa with a large group of Italians, sipping someone's homemade wine and having a wonderful meal, while gazing at the rolling hills of Umbria in the distance.

The cost, believe it or not, isn't as bad as you might think. If you do Italy right, you can stay away from staying in the expensive cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice. You can stay in the smaller, more culturally true towns and go into the cities as you please. There, you will find lodging can be MUCH, MUCH more affordable, and even meals will be much cheaper. In fact, you could easily save hundreds of dollars every day this way, and at the same time get a much more authentic experience.

If you are concerned about who to go with, and you don't have a friend that will go with you, try a small group tour (not one of the big bus tours), where you will meet with people and just have a great time. If you look at the source below, that is my business, and we have singles quite frequently, and they have as much fun (sometimes more) than couples!

Airfare can be quite inexpensive if you travel in the lower seasons, and Italy is wonderful no matter when you go!

I have been twice. The people were jerks the towns were dirty but the food was good. That being said I have heard better things about other places. I went to Milan and Genoa. It seemed like there were a lot of bums and locals weren't to hospitable. So avoid Milan and Genoa and shoot for Rome, Florence, and Venice. That is where I plan to go if I go back.

I visited Italy in July 2007 and went with my boyfriend.
We flew into Naples and did Pompeii from there before getting a train up to Rome.
In Rome we did the Colloseum, Vatican City, The Angels and Demons tour, a river cruise, The Roman Forum and generally hung around the city in the sun.
We hired a car and drove up the coast to Pisa to see the leaning tower before carrying on to Florence where we did the Duomo, markets and sights.
Last was Venice whis is very beaytiful. Visited Murano and went on a gondola.
You HAVE to go Italy is really awesome!!

Visit Tuscany is wonderful. visit also Roma, Venice and Naples. Avoid... nothing.

I loved it!
I found it lived up to my expectations.
Cost...well look up some websites like expedia.com, lastminute.com for flights...there are lots of websites. keep checking them and see what the average costs are for different times fo the year and become familiar with them and then you can see bargins when they come.
accommodation with be the other cost...similar to flights there
see hostel websites like www.hostels.com, www.hostelz.com., www.hostelworld.com or www.hostelbookers.com and again see what costs are for different times of the year. Sharing rooms will be much cheaper and you can meet some great people and can even travel with them or meet up with them at later dates.

I travelled around by myself for the majority of my travels...the first few days will be the hardest, but you soon get into the groove.
Be prepared....get a book from Lonely planet or some other guide to see whats there and devise a possible plan from that. Take your time and build up an itinery...the better you have planned it, the better your trip will be
GO GO GO!! Don;t be afraid to go by yourself....be aware but not afraid!
