It is a cute town that was made very famous by virtue of the fact that the book (and movie) Under the Tuscan Sun was based there. Additionally, the scenes of Italy in the move "Life is Beautiful" are based there, as well as scenes from "The English Patient"
That said, hoardes of tourists have flocked to the area and massive numbers of Americans have bought places there. The result it that it has really become something of a tourist trap with extremely elevated prices. Where there once stood fresh vegetable stands and butchers, you now find postcard and souvenir shops.
Not to knock that... some people want that, but that sense of the undiscovered Italy that you get from the movie is pretty much gone now.
If you are looking for that feeling, look toward Umbria and Northern Lazio
