I've studied in Italy for 3 months, last Spring in Rome. One of the best times I have ever had. The language is not that difficult, there's so many places to go and see here. Soooo much culture and THE FOOD!!! It's just all so amazing. You will have a wonderful time no matter where you go in Italy.

First of all...Italy is NOT America. Leave all of those American ideals at home when you leave. Italy is a wonderful place to live....the people are nice and friendly....so NOW is the time to learn some Italian. Don't expect Italians to know English, because most of them DO NOT. Your trip will be 100% more enjoyable if you can chat with the locals. The people there will smile and help you converse as much as possible. Driving there is tricky at best for most Americans...especially on the Autostradas. Most Italians really love Americans because of how we helped them in WWII and because we are well known as understanding and courteous.
Have fun at the typical "tourist destinations" but be willing to leave the tour bus and check out some things NOT on the "To Do List". Take your camera and have a great time. Sample the foods and the wine. Check out the resort lakes, castles and museums.
I lived in northern Italy for two years while in the US Air Force from 1980-82. I always dream of being able to retire there someday.
