I have been to Rome a couple times and to Sicily 3 times. There is so much to see in Rome The Collesseum , St Peters, Sistine Chapel and Spanish Steps. There is so much more and it's easy to get around the city on public transportation. They are digging up so much of the city these days to excavate new sites of old Roman times. I love Italy and Rome is it.s heart. But Sicily is a special place I am planning to go back soon. There are many sites of the early Greek empire left in Sicily it's almost like going to Greece. Sicily is the bread basket of Italy and they are now getting into expanding there vineyards. It's easy to travel around the island by train and I stay away from Palermo by flying into Catania near Mt Etna. Mt Etna is a great place to visit very active volcano. It was erupting the last time I was there. Taormina near Catania is a beautiful resort area that is mostly known by Germans. You don't run into the American tourist as often in Sicily. I have been to the Aeolian Islands off the coast of Sicily ,a group of volcanic islands with ferry service between them and each one has it's own flavor and adventure. Agrigento is known for the Greek Ruins and everyone is very friendly and helpful but you need to know that Italian is not their native language , the sicilian language is different so even if you speak a little Italian they may not understand you very well. You can still find people who do speak english too. It is a very different experience in Italy and I love it!

Does *Rere* really know Sicily? Probably she slept for 3 years! Sicily is one of the most interesting and beautiful region in Italy: you can find history, nature and nice food. Spring is the best season to go there: smell of lemon and orange flowers is wonderful! But it's better to go on holiday that to live in... (I'm Sicilian).
P.S. Genius Cook is right.

I've been to both. Rome is great.... Sicily is a great place to vacation. here are some of my thoughts on Italy:
I like:
The language
The many different regions and their differences
Sicily and it’s different types of coast lines.
Friuli – the people, language, the grappa and the polenta
The neighbourhood grocery stores (that still exist)
The fruit, vegetable, meat and fish markets.
Venice & the lagoon
Agrigento
Rome
Pizza in Naples
Arancini & granite in Sicily
Pedavena beer
Risotto
Prosecco
Mount Etna for summer walks and winter skiing
Cheese
Liver & onions in Venice
The fact that family is still important
The sincere friendships

I don’t like:
The interference of the Church in politics & personal choices
The arrogance of the Milanese
The hard heads in Brianza
The traffic
The lack of business ethics
The politics and the fact that there are members of parliament that have been indicted for crimes
The bullies in the High Schools
The shopping malls
Many Italians keep their cities dirty and their homes immaculately clean. Why can’t they do the same for their cities?
Sidewalk parking
The “pizo” = the money the mafia asks business people for for protection (from the mafia!).

sicily is a good place to visit but living....i wouold suggest not. after a while it gets kind of boring that's why you should only visit. there are good theme parks like etnaland. or you could even go sledding on mount etna. its really fun. the naval bases are nice at first...but like i said after a while it gets boring.
