Have you ever been to Calabria, Italy?

My ancestors were from the Calabria region of Italy (I'm not sure which city). Is it a tourist friendly-place? I'm wondering too where the major cities would be, and where the cultural places would be (these might be where my ancestors were from since they were musicians). Any information would be helpful!

I was in all county and is really wonderful. I stayed in Reggio Calabria, where there are less tourists than in other part of Italy, but the nature and the weather were great and the people very nice.

Hi, I am Italian.
I know many person from Calabria, but I have never gone here.

Calabria is far enough from standard tourist zone and land transport are awful (not less than 5 hours from Rome). But there is a not so bad airport in Lamezia.

According the stereotype, unhabitants are closed toward outsiders, but very warm when they get familiar; and they are very touchy (never refuse an offer of a dinner).
This are stereotypes but most beatiful location are in lofty old villages.
Services are usually under italian standard: Wikipedia is the first website in english that I found.

Neverthless it is a very, very beatutiful zone (sea and wild mountains)

Hi,

3 years ago my wife and I traveled by car from Reggio Calabria up to Locri where we stayed for 4 fantastic days. The beaches was the best of whole Italy, the peaople was very friendly and the food was top. And when the hotels cost 50% compared with Tuscany and Amalfi you could save lots of money going there.
We just fell in love with this Italian region and will return for sure!

The nationalpark(s) in the inland consisted of a big variety of wildlife and offered scenic views everywhere - fantastic!

We also had 3 days in Catanzaro which also are a great place.

I have several good friends living in northern Italy and they are all completely wrong about the people living in Calabria - they tell stories which are passed from man to man and most of it are bullshit.

To find your roots I would start in Reggio Calabria and work out from there.

Have a look at this site to see if you can get some tips:

I hope you find out about your ancestors!

Calabria is wonderful. Much less touristy, warmer weather and less expensive then other parts of Italy. To find out more specifics about the cities and cultural places just go to calabria.it

I went on search for my family in a small town called Maropati.
You can always get a taxi to the town you need to find. Be careful I got ripped off by the taxi driver.

A must is TROPEA in Calabria. Great for holiday makers.
What a romantic and amazing place.

Check out my photos of Calabria if you like.

Yes I have been to Calabria many many times... My mother still has lots of family there, I have been to Cosenza (Belmonte Calabro) and I must say the people are much nicer than the ones in the north, the beaches are beautiful and the food is soooo good. The weather is relatively much warmer because it is further south, and there lots to do, with all the great clubs along the beach. Just be aware many "night spots" are only open during the summer months of July-August. I don't now when your planning on going?....

Have a great trip!

Sorry I'm not from there. One thing I can tell you is that you is that it's nice to have ancestors from other parts of the world. I have ancestors from other places and it's fun learning about that place and how they lived.

My sister visits Rome often. She is job hunting and thinking about moving there. She has sent us Numerous pictures of all kinds of tourist attractions in Rome. Looks like a great place to visit (not move to). Our neighbors also went this summer and their vacation pics included some of the same places my sister has pics of. This season of 'The Bachelor' is also from Rome

Nope, and don't plan to be.

There's a town in Italy called Calabria.
There's a market square in Calabria.
There's 6 bars in the market square.
One of those bars is called "Vino"
There's a window in the bar called "Vino"
There's a table in the window.
There's four chairs at that table.
One of those chairs faces north.
Somebody sat in that chair once.
Okay?
