Oh this is very difficult to answer. I have been to both and both have very wonderful unique atmospheres. Rome is magnificent with all the different eras of architecture. The people there are wonderful, vivacious. Venice can't be beat sailing down through the Grand Canal and roaming through the tiny streets. It is a bit more insular though, a little suffocating. I'm sorry, I'm of pitiful help therefore I recommend BOTH!!! I guess I don't get the points, sorry! :( |

They’re both beautiful cities, so you have to experience them both. If I had to choose between going back to one of them it would have to be Rome, simply because there is so much more to do.
You can do Venice in two days, it’s a wonderful place, but its small, its an island that measures roughly 2.5 miles across, and most of that is residential areas. Don’t get me wrong, Venice is great! But the choice is simple, Rome has all the things that any big metropolis has, including night life, (which Venice have very little of) more museums, more ruins, more things to see in general.
I hope you have the chance to visit them both. |

Thanks to you all.
I'm Roman and I obviously agree with you that Rome is a wonderful city.
However Venice is in his way extraordinary a city floating on water.
As I live in Rome, if I could go back I would like see again Venice |

I have been to Rome and Venice twice. They are both gorgeous cities with many sites to see, but both times I liked Rome a bit better. There is simply more to see and do in Rome because it is so much bigger. Italy is such a beautiful, wonderful place and if I went back I would definitely visit Rome again. |

Rome - Caput Mundi - the center of the world. Not so any more but the sheer thought of it is enough to make you enjoy this thoroughly modern city. It's Italy's most cosmopolitan city probably and so has more than things Italian to offer. It's a grand dame of a city.
Venice - Was once the queen, the Wall Street of the Adriatic and beyond. Great place to visit, fantastically romantic.
Yours is a tough question and so I'll have to answer that I like both of these cities, each for different reasons, and I would return to either time and time again. |

Yes. I've been to both. Spent two days in Venice and three in Rome. I LOVED both but if I had to pick only one to visit again, I would pick Rome.
Three days in Rome was just enough to whet my appetite. I could spend a month there and still not see all of the things I want to see. Heck, I could spend a week just in the Vatican Museum! Other than being as expensive as heck, I can't think of one bad thing to say about Rome.
My reasons for enjoying Rome so much is that the history spans a much longer time than Venice. Venice came to prominence in the late 12th century. Rome was a world power starting in the sixth century BC. I can't explain in words the feeling of strolling through the Forum looking and touching structures that are more than 2,500 years old!
Also, there is just so much more in Rome than Venice. More restaurants, more museums, more corners to explore and photograph.
When/if you go to Rome, stay near a Metro station - you can get almost anywhere in Rome with just a little walking and a Metro card. |

Hands down, Rome! If it's a choice between one or the other forget Venice!
Don't get me wrong everybody should spend 2 days in Venice...I spent a month in Rome, I scratched the surface! |

yes - been to both. I live in Roma, and my gramps live in Venice :D
i love both of them :PpP they're so different. Venice looks real nice but the avg. age of ppl who actually LIVE there is 65 :) it's basically a dying city, still alive for tourists. (its even sinking and the government is spending millions to keep it afloat. lol!)
It's incredibly beautiful but theres not really anywhere to go, besides visiting bridges, canals, museums and churches. And feeding the pigeons. lol! Most (unlucky) teenagers or yourg ppl who happen to live there, can't wait to go to Mestre (nearby city) for their needs (social life...stores...malls...just anything).
Rome is just great; not as romantic and "strange" as Venice but there's everything here. |
