Summer is very hot and sticky, in Europe in general, particularly in the cities and you can't count on there being air conditioning.
As for what do wear, Italians and Europeans in general are very stylish and put a lot more thought into what they wear than Americans do (although they make it seem effortless).
A few tips for women:
-- You can never go wrong with black.
-- Italians don't do over-sized t-shirts or tank tops that aren't fitted or tailored. They also don't wear shorts (although a new trend is the kind of short/capri pant that hits just below the knee).
-- Some nice dresses or skirts and tops will keep you cool but not have you stick out as a tourist.
-- Always carry a wrap (scarf) to wrap around your shoulders or around your waist to go into churches. No bare arms/shoulders or short skirts allow.
-- Women tend to accessorize -- so a put together look with sunglasses, headbands, jewelry belt, etc. will make you look more local. And for easy packing bring neutral colors that mix and match and then use accessories to change your outfit (I'm starting to feel like a Glamour article but I guess they are right.)
-- You'll be doing a lot of walking so shoes are important, but Italians don't wear sneakers (unless they are expensive designer sneakers). This is where I would recommend you invest a bit in a very comfortable pair of all-purpose walking shoes or sandals. I like Ecco, Clarks, Geox -- all expensive brand names but your feet will thank you (although I got a great pair of black Clarks at TJ Maxx for $20 so if you search you may get lucky).
-- Don't carry a backpack. This signals you out as a tourist and actually is less safe than a shoulder bag that you hold close to your body and always keep a hand on.
Men can get away with khakis, polos or short-sleeved button-downs and good walking shoes or sandals.
Have a great trip! |

It will be very warm, similar to the states. Shorts, short sleeves, capris, skirts, etc. Keep in mind that if you plan on entering churches you will need to have arms and legs covered with appropriate lengths. However, if you plan to visit higher elevations in the Alps it will be cold. You will definitely want to bring a jacket or sweatshirt along. |

Unless you're very unlucky, Italy and the south of France will be very hot. Switzerland can be wet but also get very hot in summer in the low lying areas. Northern France can be hot or warm & showery. |
