Try www.venere.com they have an area by area search and lots to choose from. We've used them loads of times and they're great.

Having been there, i havn't seen much scope for a good hotel (although i'm sure they do exist). I stayed at the Lido di Jesolo resort - about 1 hour away by ferry and bus - i highly recommend this, one of the best resorts in Europe (that's the secret out then!)

I agree about using Venere.com-it`s the best hotel finder on the internet-no matter what you`re budget,personal requirments,or destination-it`s a God send.

Best hotel in Venice?

We stayed in "Casa Del Malgrano"-a small family-run hotel-the prices are very reasonable-and include a hearty continental breakfast too.

It`s in the "Carneggio" estate-rifgt in the heart of the old Jewish part of the city-and it`s the most beautiful area.

We were so impressed-that we`re staying there again,in the Autumn-for my partner`s birthday.

As for Venice being expensive-we found that if you use the local supermarkets,etc for food,drinks-it`s not too bad.

There`s one near the "Casa" hotel called "Billa"-we got most of our food,etc from there-on a really small budget-and treated ourselves to a couple of nice evening meals.

Just dont` go buying a coffee at St.Marks Square-the prices shoot up in all the most "touristy" parts.

Also-don`t waste cash on a gondola-buy a three or seven day waterbus-or as they say there-Vaparetto ticket.

Costs just a few euros and takes you all over-along the grand canal,to St.Marks-you can`t go wrong on foot either-loads of places to explore-and it`s free!!

We chose a lovely little hotel half way between the Rialto Bridge and St Marks. We were well looked after and the stairs kept us fit.
You can save maoney on food and the market the other side of the Rialto bridge is fabulous.
But whatever you do get up early to see St Marks & the Campanile, once the cruise ships land the queues are horrendous.
Take comfortable shoes.

I've been to Venice three times and only stayed in the city once. I spent an enormous amount of money and wasn't particulary impressed. The other times I took the train out of the city and stayed as far away as Vicenza. If you are determined to stay in the city you can check the internet or if you prefer to make your plans on the fly...at the train station, there are men who will ask if you need a hotel, you tell them what you need. They will walk you to the hotel. At the hotel you are encouraged to look at the room before you accept it. Do it! The hotel pays the man who brings you to them you are not expected to.

Personally, I've found that you pay a great deal for a place that you spend very little time in. Venice is not cheap. A gondola ride for 3 ran us $80.
