Trains are cheaper in Italy than they are in other Western European countries. They are fast, reliable, and fun. A train from Milano to Genova should take no more than 2 hours and be price competitive with any other method. I wouldn't bother with the bus. Trains are far more comfortable and fast, and Italian drivers are notoriously frightening. I also probably wouldn't bother with an advance reservation before your trip. When you first arrive in Milan, stop by the train station and buy your ticket to Genova (2 or 3 days in advance, maximum). Buy your return tickets back to Milan either at that time, or right when you arrive in Genova. Some trains fill up and you're best off getting a reserved seat slightly prior to departure. Others are first-come, first-served and you just show up and ride. You'll find out when you buy your tickets, which is why it's a good idea not to wait until the last minute. But you don't need to buy them weeks in advance either. |

Definately the train.
Go to www.trenitalia.com to check out schedules and prices.
We took the bus a lot also when traveling, and it was very easy, but I'm not aware of a website to give you.
Good luck! |

Yeah, the trains are the best bet.
Not only are they relatively cheap, by they are often full of friendly backpackers and families. |

The trains are your best bet for this trip. You can work out specific schedules and costs at the Italian train website: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=3fdbe14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD
The price of the trip will depend on the type of train you take. The cheapest option is a regional train which will cost you 8.75 euro each way (approximately £14 euro round trip). You don't need to book this ticket in advance, there are no reserved seats on the regional trains.
This type of train makes a lot of stops, so it's around 40 minutes longer than an ICplus train on the same route. The ICplus is faster, but the standard fare is 15.50 euro each way. If you buy the ticket at least one day in advance, you may be able to get the discounted Amica fare of 12.60 euro each way. |
