Hi. I'm looking to rent an apartment in Rome...?

...and I'm a little scared of being conned or cheated. I will be renting an individual's unit, so its not a company. What are some ways I can safeguard the transaction and experience?

Thanks.

Also how is the area around Triburtina station? What part of town is that considered?

hi i'm italian i'm from rome. Here life is very expensive but if you want an apartment for rent you have to go to a real estate agency and ask. tiburtina is very far from the center of the town and i don't like it to be honest. Anyway people from rome are very friendly don't worry ;))))) kiss ;)

Try slow travel's web page. They have link to tons of companies who rent places along with a lot of reviews.

Try this website http://www.rentalinrome.com/
My family rented an apartment in the center of Rome from this website this past January and overall we had a good experience.

Renting in Rome is expensive, but really depends on where you want to be and hoe much you have to spend. In the center, one bedrooms can go for as high as 1,000 euros. Unfortunately the illegal renting market is quite popular in Rome (where the landlord rents to you without declaring it and thus pays no taxes). Sign up with the VCN Rome yahoo group, a listeserv for expats in Rome where a lot of rentals are advertised. You can also find rooms to rent, which may be a good idea as it will be cheaper and you will have someone to show you the ropes.

I personally do not like the Tiburtina area, but have had freinds living there that said OK things about it. Make sure you rent near a train or metro station, as it will be your only means of moving around the city.

Also, unless you are renting for a very long term, try to get the apartment semi-furnished, as unfurnished in Italy means you only get the walls and a toilet. No kitchen, not even a kitchen sink :)
