Venice - Saint Mark's Square, The Doge's Palace, Rialto bridge, Bridge of Sighs, Arsenal, The Accademia, Giacomo Cassanova's house, The Grand Canal, Murano and Burano.

Rome - Vatican Museums which include the Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Basillica, Castel Saint Angelo, Forum, Colosseum, Palatine, Circus Maximus, Via Appia, Gallery Borghese, Capitoline Museums, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon and many many churches.

I can only list a few things here or I'd be going on for days.

Great guide books are the Eyewitness Travel Guides. They have photos, every attraction you can think of, opening times and great maps.

Take a look at these web sites and enjoy your trip.

Both are nice though I'd prefer Rome.
The spots to visit are countless ...it's ROME, remember it - Colosseo, San Pietro, Fori Imperiali, Terme, Circo Massimo, Musei Capitolini ... the list would be endless!

No suggestions for hotels, try www.venere.com!

Are you going alone or with someone?

For a hotel, visit http://www.venere.com

This site is very helpful, I used it when I went to Venice. It has alot of user reviews for your research.

Our favorite hotel in Rome is Hotel Delle Muse in the Parioli district: http://www.hoteldellemuse.com

We have written quite a bit about it in the Italy travelogues on our non-commercial web site, TheTravelzine, http://www.thetravelzine.com

Have a great time in Rome!

Rome is better this time of the year; Venice tends to be "aromatic" during summer because the canals are also used as sewage outfall.

For lodging it depends how much you want to spend; I normally stay at the marriot hotel in Via veneto, close to the US Embassy and walking distance to Spanish steps, Roman Forum, Trevi and Navona and many other sights. Nearby there is a metro station for more distant attractions.
