I'd agree with Venere: http://www.venere.com/ . I've been using the site for the past ten years here in Italy and in most of the rest of Europe. If you ever go to the Netherlands, hotels.nl is a great site: http://www.hotels.nl/

Both of these are very reliable.

On this website http://en.reserver.it/ you'll find a lot of budget accommodations in Italy

I've used Venere.com to good effect.

My advice is to use a booking engine like Venere, Fastbooking, Booking.com to find out the name of the hotel. Then once you've got the rate from Venere, phone up the hotel and see if they can beat it.

At the very least the hotel might be able to offer you someone for the same price as what you are paying through the portal. I've had it happen to me that sometimes the hotel cannot beat the price, which is crazy but I'm not going to explain the dynamics of why. In that case you'll need to go with Venere or whoever.

Apply this strategy for every other travel service on the web. Flights, car hire and whatever.

You'll soon realise that the best available rate is only available through the hotel's website!
