How bad is the crime epidemic in Italy caused by Roma gypsies?

It's not as bad as it used to be, because the Italians have begun to attack them, so they don't come out as much unless they have to. Years ago a group of young ones surrounded me begging and tried to go into my bag. When I caught on to what they were up to, I took my very heavy bag and started to swing it at them and they ran. The sad thing was that grown Italian men were standing there watching and didn't do a thing. The Roma are not the only criminals in Italy, unfortunately, and at least when you see them, they stand out and you know to avoid them. But beware of the ba$tards who come smiling in your face when you have to pay. They'll be the first to rip you off. Always count your change and always check your bills to make sure they're not fake.

When I was in Italy 7 years ago it was out of control, they swarmed you everywhere you went! When I was there this past September, I hardly noticed them, even in the touristy areas. That being said, it ALWAYS pays to be aware of your surroundings and your belongings at all times.
Have fun!

unsure. just make sure your wallet or purse is where you can see it. when you feel that you are being followed...(gypsy in front and behind you, be cautious as they can pretend to bump into you). a friend of mines nearly got picket pocketed. when they notice that you do "notice" what they are doing, they will walk away. (give them the evil glance).

good luck.

major pick pocketers in naples (naopli) and other places where the mafia are located.
