Italy is at its best in spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November). During these seasons, the scenery is beautiful, the temperatures are pleasant and there are relatively few crowds. Try to avoid August, as this is the time that most Italians take their vacations, and many shops and businesses are closed as a result.

Get a Lonely Planet or Blue Moon book on Italy. They are filled with fabulous information about everything including hotels, restraurants, places to see, tid bits about areas. The books are wonderful. You won't go wrong!! Or go to lonelyplanet.com and into there thorn tree forum. |

I would suggest to hire a car in Naples and head east through Campania, Basilicata and Aplulia. There are breathtaking nature, kind people and quite less expencive than along the turist traps further north.
The Adriatic coast at Gargano are beautiful!
The same can be said about the Ionian Sea.coastline.
You may find lots of info at this site:

Check out Gate1 travel agency. Now I will say they were no frills, but it did the job. We flew out of JFG (NYC) in mid March into Rome via Alitalia. Let me tell you the flight was just about as uncomfortable as it could have been. But the free wine they served made it easier. Fortunately our flight left at 8 pm so we were able to sleep for a few hours. The seats were tiny and and food terrible. As was the wine, but it did the job getting me to sleep. From there we flew to Venice. The flight wasn't full enough so we had to wait an extra two hours for another flight to come in before we left. Let me also tell you they translate many things into English, but they also forget, follow the crowd that you left with. Then we took a water taxi to Hotel Abbazia (I loved this and can't praise them enough), where we stayed for 2 nights. Then we took a train to Florence where we stayed at the Hotel Meridiana (cheesy, but clean with a great breakfast) for three days. We did a land only package in Rome for 4 days that included Hotel Mariano, a great hotel near the Termini in renovation but our room was wonderful overlooking a piazza with a shower to die for. We took the Eurostar for about 70Euro for both of us. Then they brought us back to the airport in Rome back to NYC. The total cost for this was $2100 for the both of us. They called it an 11 day vacation, but we were only had 9 full days in Italy. I still feel that it was worth it. I am checking now, and I can't get airfare for less than $600 in the fall. They have 6 day packages for $700. Check them out. Again, no frills, but cheap and once you get to Italy you can spend your money. |
