Basically you pay for the gondola regardless of how many people are in it, whether 2 or 6 people. In my experience we have usually paid around 60E for a half hour. Do shop around, the ones closest to tourist areas, eg Piazza San Marco, tend to be more expensive.
The same goes for food. Get away from the tourist areas, not only will they be expensive, but the food will be less authentic and more generic as they cater to foreign tastes. Head to Piazza San Margherita, which is near the Acadamia, so has reasonably priced food, or Cannareggio in the north, which is has more locals & less tourists. Also don't order from the set menu or "tourist menu". It is often not good value for money and you may miss out on a seasonal treat or daily special. Talk to your waiter for good food, they are happy to advise (and usually speak a degree of English). Buon Appetito!
Another thing you should do is go up the Campanile in Piazza San Marco, it costs about 7E per person and the view at the top over the Basilica and the rest of Venice & the Lido is amazing!! |

Gondola rates are generally up for barter.
These are private vessels. In earlier times they were attached to one household, like a chauffeur today. But once their duties were done for the day they where allowed to moonlight.
They were never cheap.
Today they all rely upon the romantic tourist notion that no trip to Venezia is complete without using their services and charge accordingly.
It gets more expensive after Easter, this is when all the cruise ships call, often as many as 7 or 8 a day, calling for 5 to 10 hours. This results in floods of day trippers prepared to pay exorbitant sums for the "experience" and to tick another thing of their itinerary.
As for restaurants I can think of a couple straight away. The first is just over the bridge from the railway station, all the day trippers fly past it without notice. Ristorante Vittoria tel +39041718500. Costs €8/9 for basic fare plus wine.
For a great evening view then Gianni's on Zattere 918. Great view across Canale Guidecca watching the shipping. Tel +390415237210, closed wednesdays. |

Hi, I'm italian and I went to Venice two years ago.
The rent cost about € 100 - € 150!I advice you to visit the lagoon and, when you see a "gondoliere", ask to him how much does he want!!!!Choose and find the more cheap!!!
Happy holiday!!! |

You can usually haggle the price with a gondolier espcially in the daytime when prices are cheaper. Have a great time! |
