Fortunately, you are going at an off peak time so rates will be significantly lower than what they could be during the summer.

I suggest you check out Rick Steeves, he has a travel show and lots of books and videos on travel in Europe.

Pensieons (sp?) in Rome are the way to go I have heard. Check out his website and publications. He is pretty good and detailed.
