Use a calling card. It will be cheaper to use than your cell phone. Your phone may not work at your destination.

if you have a t-mobile phone with quad band then you should be all set thet are international you should be able to use that over there as well as most of the rest of the world. they have the biggest GLOBAL network. though International rates i think still will apply but I'm almost positive the cell rates will be cheaper than a calling card.

it is a good idea to get a calling card though to use as a backup. also for Pete Sake remember the VOLTAGE DIFFERENCE make sure you get the proper adapter to charge your phone without destroying it.

though my advise is call collect from the airport when you arrive. call collect once in the middle of your trip to let them know you are alive. and call them once just b4 you fly home. each call should be no longer than 2-3 mins. save your trip stories for when you get back trust me they will be easier to tell and you will find you have a more attentive audience.

this is assuming you are only going for a few weeks to a month if you are going on an extended trip than call home about once a month and limit calls to 5-10 mins. again save the stories for when you get home.

if going for a year or more call once a month for the first 3 mo then 2 or 3 times only for the remainder of the trip. like i said though call collect if they arent willing to accept the charges for a 5 min call to hear that you are well then you don't need to call home in the first place. also save the calls to the friends too they can hear all about it when you get home. but take LOTS OF PICTURES!

It may benefit you to do both depending on the rate you are charged for each method in each country. Compare each method in each country and go from there. To be on the safe side I would definitely have a card as a backup. Speedypin allows instant purchase and instant PIN by email.

To get a sharp answer you should tell us where your family is located.
Generally you can call almost everywhere from the plenty of Phone Centers available in every Italian cities.
To use a mobile is not convenient, even using phone cards.
Phone cards are convenient if used from a wire phone or public boot.
Ask if the company operating in your homeland sells phonecards to be used when abroad.
