You can travel from Trieste to Vienna by train.
There are 2 train options per day:
1) Trieste Centrale - Udine - Vienna Sudbahnhof
Depart Trieste 15.51, arrival Udine 17.10
Change in Udine and depart 17.37, arrival Vienna 23.35
Journey time 7 hours 44 mins
Ticket standard adult 2nd class €55.70
2) Trieste Centrale - Mestre - Vienna Sudbahnhof (overnight)
Depart Trieste 21.54, arrival Mestre 23.49
Change in Mestre and depart 01.30, arrival Vienna 08.42
Journey time 10 hours 48 mins

I've taken the night train that xalynn gave you the information for although I don't start from Trieste. It's a good option for Vienna because you can sleep through the night and arrive early in the day. The conductor brings around coffee & a brioche in the morning.
There is another option. You can take a morning train from Trieste to Mestre and then catch the Intercity bus to Villach at 11:40 am. From Villach, there's a train at 3:14 pm arriving in Vienna at 7:35 pm |
