Stay in hostels and travel by train nationally.
Look for budget airlines like Ryanair for international flights.
Carry a backpack that is light-weight so cut down on excess-baggage fees.
Get a working visa so you can do some bar work or English teaching while you travel (good for long trips).
Make friends in hostels so that you go visit them (and they can come visit you). |

Do your homework before you travel, like your destination cost, lodging cost and meal cost. See how you can save in between. Also look for possibility of getting some income while travelling by part-timing. |

In the USA, drive a car that you can sleep in. Find a friend, relative, friend of a friend, relative of a friend, etc.... to stay with. If you are a foreign student, try to drive through campus and ask whether anyone know or can point you to a place where students from your country live or hang out. They might feed you and offer a place to sleep at least for a night. Eat cheaply and when you are hungry. Take a shower at the camp site or the beach (with shower or running water). Make sure you have enough money for the gas at least to get back home!
(Someone actually did all these....2 weeks for 3000 miles...cheaply.) |
