Follow the registration process here - https://www.aa.com/apps/AAdvantage/InstantEnrollment.jhtml?anchorEvent=false&referer=/apps/&_requestid=258370
Then write down that number and provide it to your ticket agent when you arrive at the airport to earn credit for your miles flown. Happy travels!

You do need to apply in order to earn the frequent flier miles on American Airlines (it's called AAdvantage Enrollment). If you go to their Web site (www.aa.com) and click on the link on the left side "AAdvantage" and then on the second item from the top "Instant Enrollment" it will take you to the enrollment form. You can enroll from any country and it is very easy. I believe they will give you a temporary membership number immediately which you can use if you're traveling in the near future - and then a permanent card will be sent in the mail to you.

Here is the link to the enrollment page if this is easier: https://www.aa.com/apps/AAdvantage/InstantEnrollment.jhtml?anchorEvent=false&referer=/apps/&_requestid=251912
