How do I go about visiting a vineyard in Tuscany, Italy when I am on holiday in May? |
I've looked on the internet but it's just throwing up package deals... I just want to find a vineyard near San Gimignano, Siena or Florence and visit it one afternoon for wine tasting, etc. We would make our own way there. Does anyone know if this is possible & if so can anyone recommend somewhere? |

Hello,
There are so many vineyard in Tuscany that really you cant' have problem in finding one near to where you are. When looking on internet you should avoid the word "tour" and just go for wine tasting. In San Gimignano see the "Tenuta Torciano" . If you happen to be in Greve in Chianti I think it worth to see the "Castello Vicchiomaggio" there you can have wine-tasting and you should try their Vin Santo which is really great! If you go to Montepulciano look for the "Nobile wine" and in Montalcino look for the "Brunello wine". At Gaiole in Chianti there is the Brolio Castle which can be visited and in the nearby winery they have wine-tasting. Mind you, I think it is very very touristy! Hope I've helped. |

just call or email the vineyard directly. VillaBanfi in a good one, and offers tours in english..ignore the bad press lately about italian vineyards. Most are open this time of the year all day, and I am sure you won't have problems finding one. You could ask to the hotel where you are staying to organize one for you, I do it for my clients all the time, (I am in Piemont.) |

Have you booked your hotel yet? We stayed at a winery, an aggriturismo. We had our own little apartment with a full kitchen and the grocery store was a 5 minute walk. The aggriturismo was in Montaione near San Gimignano and it was awesome: http://www.agricolalavalle.it/valle/mappaen.htm This place is a family run vineyard that produces wine and olive oil. You'll get a complementary bottle of wine when you check in, then you can purchase more from the front desk.
We rented a car and visited Sienna, San Gimignano, Volterra, and Florance. Most of the cities have little wine shops that advertise wine tasting on the sandwich board. That was a good way for us to sample a bunch of the regional wines.
If you do choose to stay at a working farm (aka, agriturismo), it's very relaxing. Our grocery store was a great shopping experience (3 isles of pasta, one whole isle of cheese). Plus it had a great little coffee shop in the same building. |
