How do people in Italy rent apartments?

I'm in America and am having a terrible time trying to find apartments in Rome (Italy). I have done hundreds of searches under Rome rentals, Rome apartments, Rome apartments for rent, and I keep getting nothing. I've contacted about a hundred different "apartment" companies (say apartment but are really vacation rental companies) and still have found nothing. I want to have a place when I get there, but now I'm starting to think that's not going to happen.

I was wondering how do people in Italy find apartments for rent, other than going to an agent ? I've gone to Romarentals, CROFT properties, Mercurius Relocation, etc. Are there any good agents out there? Is there an online site for a newspaper that has ads? (and Craigslist is not a good site, there are so many scammers).

And also what would you say is the AVERAGE rental for a one bedroom 40-50sqm apartment in Trastevere? I'm starting to get so many different numbers, I'm starting to think people are just overcharging.
Additional Details
I will be staying for 4 months and was really looking in Rome because my school is located in Trastevere.

Actually, I work in Trastevere, and just in front of my office there is an agency, maybe you could reserve a room in a hotel for the first days and search once you are here? The medium rate for such a flat is about 1200 euros per month, but let me tell you that it's really difficult to find one just for you, because rooms are really requested from American students in this area, as it's close to both universities... if you need help feel free to contact me.
Good luck!

Do you need a temporary rent (1 month, for example..) or a long-term rent.
In the first case, search on google/yahoo "Roma residence". Anyway, it's difficult to find something for less than 1800 - 2000 €/month.

If you need an apartment for 3-4 months... eh... you have to search in italian. We don't speak english well!!!

I give you this link for long-stay rent.
It's the most popular magazine of advertisments in Rome and "affitto" means "rent".
http://www.portaportese.it/index.jsp?kr=...
Write a word like rent, flat... and "tutti i numeri" on the right side (now find martedì 8 luglio).

Hi!
I'm from Milan (the most expensive city in Italy!;o(((
There are many apartments for rent here in Italy.
The majority of people leave messages right in front of the apartment.
You will find many occasions also in the "official wall" of the university. Many students rent a room for 300-400 euros per month.
A normal renting of an entire apartment costs like 500-700 euro per month.
I suggest you to go on the websites of university or in the websites for students.
Agencies are very very expensive...because they try to sell...or rent an entire apartment then renting a room!

I've one apartment for rent in Italy not in Rome, but in Ortona (a little marine town) at 200 kilometers from Rome, and I'm quite cheap (but not in summer months). My website:
www.direttamentesulmare.it
I can also give to you two websites to search one apartment in Rome:
