it depends on the families. some do celebrate it (but especially when u are a kid) and they might prepare a special dinner or even give you some presents. but the majority of the people don't celebrate it at all. this because you wouldn't do a party as for a birthday, and life is getting too busy. people used to celebrate it more in the past, now they might not even know when the day of their onomastico is.
but if u have the chance to be named marco, then u always get vacation on your onomastico, because st. mark is on the same day of the national holiday! (i guess thats the reason y there are so many italians named marco)

An "onomastico" is a person's Saint Day, as each day is dedicated to a Saint in the Catholic religion. Your onomastico therefore is on the day of the Saint you are named after. You don't really "celebrate" it, people just say "auguri" or "buon onomastico" to you and, if you want to, you bring pastry to your coworkers or buy them a drink. Infact, the saying goes in Italy "Il Santo paga", which translated means "The Saint pays" - as opposed to "receiving" something, as you would on your birthday.
Hope I was of help.

And btw your question was formulated perfectly!

shamrock and lilly told you everything you needed to know...but the fact is that no one do really celebrate it...i never celebrated nor met a single person that celebrate it in some way.

what is your name? Take an chatolic calendar and see when is your name. For Example, if your name is Maria, your onomastico is 12 September. See when is your name and celebrate like you do on your birthday

What is onomastico? Assuming that you're no longer little why can't you formulate sentences?
