I went to Pompeii from Rome my travel agent organized a tour for my group. If you plan this yourself you might spend a lot of time waiting for trains. With a tour the coach picks you up at your hotel (or at Termini), drives you there, a guide shows you around - sometimes lunch is provided - and then they drive you back to your hotel. The travel time from Rome to Pompeii by coach is 3.5 hours. It looks like entrance into Pompeii costs 11 euros and a guide may cost 35 euros for adults, but if you get your guide with the tour it will be less. If it were me, I'd rent an audio guide (handheld device) for 10 euros if the guides at the gate are too expensive. |

Hello,
Doing a daytrip to Pompeii from Rome is easy. First you want to go from your hotel to the termini train station in Rome. You can buy your tickets as soon as you get to Rome or the day of the trip if you wish. There are ticket counters and ticket machines that you can use. You want to purchase a ticket to Naples. This trip takes from 1.5 hours to 2 hours depending on the speed of the train. This will get you most of the way to Pompeii. From the Naples station, you must go downstairs to the metro station. You will be taking the circumvesuviana train to the Pompeii Scavi stop. This will take about half an hour. From this station it is a 5 minute walk to the front of the ruins.
You can check out the trenitalia site www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnex...
and enter in your dates and pick a time. The next screen will list the trains available. Pick the one you like. the next screen will tell you the price. You must pick a fare. If you are buying at least 23 hours in advance you can choose the "amica" fare. This is a 20% discount.
If you choose the Aeu train (high velocity) it will take just under 1.5 hours and cost 29 euros each for second class seats. If you choose a slower train it will cost less. I would recommend 2nd class on such a short trip. Once you get to Naples you can purchase your commuter tickets at the machines or counter. It will be about 8 euros round trip to Pompeii.
this trip is very easy. Just two trains. You can basically follow the crowd as most of the people on the train are going the same place you are. You will not be able to purchase your tickets from the States as the trenitalia website will not take non-italian issued credit cards. Don't worry, though. There are lots of trains leaving every day from
Rome to Naples. You will want to leave around 7 am. or earlier to give you enough time to enjoy the ruins.
Hope this helps, Donna |

Donna has given you most of the details. The only thing she didn't mention is that the train from Naples to Pompeii isn't a Trenitalia train - you'll need to follow the signs in the Naples for the Circumvesuviana trains - the trains going to Sorrento stop at Pompeii within a short walk of the entrance to the ruins. You'll get off at the Pompei Scavi stop. There's a trip planner for the Circumvesuviana trains here: http://servizi.vesuviana.it/orari/orarinew2/modulow3c.htm. The cost between the Napoli Garibaldi station and the Pompei Scavi station is 2.40 euro each way and the ride is 36 minutes. |
