How do you pronounce "Baiae" , the city in Italy?

How do you pronounce "Baiae"?

Crogiolo dei Mondi
Do you mean in Italian or English?

If you mean in Italian:

"Bai" is pronounced "Bye"

Instead there are two different pronunciations for "ae":

if we consider the Latin pronunciation ( some cities, especially in Southern Italy, have got Latin name) it will be "eh" like the second E in "eleven"

Instead, if the pronunciation is in the Italian way, it is "uheh", (U like in "us" and E like the second one in "eleven")

So it could be:

Bye-eh

Bye-uheh

However, in my opinion the first one is more probable because the second one sounds very strange...

As someone already told you, this one was the anciest name of the site you know and it's in latin, so you spell it like "bye", adding the "e" at the end pronounced as you pronounce the first one in "every".

I think you intend Baiae, but it isn't a city, it's a small village near Neaples (otherwise there is Baiae Domitiae, also near Neaples, then I don't think there are other places in Italy called so).

However, these latin names of cities and town have been substituted, during the centuries, with similar italian words, so now this place you speak about is called "Baia" ("baia" in italian is a small gulf) and nowadays latin names are hurdly ever used. So don't worry about Baiae if you come to Italy: the inhabitants just say "Baia".

I hope to have been useful, and not to have done too much mistakes (I'm italian...)
