Don't carry a bag and try to look as much like a local as possible.

When I'm in a new country I always keep my wallet in my front pocket and never carry to much cash, passport or any other important documents. I always carry copies of the passpot and other documents.

Also, this may seem vague but walk around town with confidence and a sense of urgency, like you're late for an important meeting. If you stop to take pictures of every monument in Rome people will know you're a tourist.

It is true that pickpockets are extremely crafty and good at what they do, but if you avoid crowded public transport and seedy parts of town you may be able to avoid them.

they do have some tricks...one thing alot of seamen do is put thier wallet in thier front pocket..then when a group of gypsy children ect approach just put your hand over that pocket and keep walking...one of the tricks the kids used to use was they would be patting you...so you got three four or more kids touching you .. trying to pull away..by the time you are out of the group...wallet would be gone..unless it was in front pocket hand over it..ok then peace..dont ever where a fanny pack there either...both shipmates that I saw leave the ship with one , got it snatched....course I got an opinion on fanny packs but this is not the place....peace

I've been three times and never had any trouble. Just be aware of your surroundings. Watch out for small children especially. Don't lay your wallet on a counter while buying ice cream.
