How far is Florence and Venice from Rome? What is the cost on a train, and the journey time? ?

Are either of them accessible for a day trip or are they too far?

The Italian train website is here (english interface): http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD

I live about two hours north of Florence and go to Rome as a day trip fairly frequently. Getting from Rome to Florence is very easy. A Eurostar from Rome to Florence takes about 1 hr 40 min and costs 36.10 euro in 2nd class at the standard rate. If you buy the ticket at least one day in advance, you may be able to get the discounted Amica fare of 28.90 euro. Another option is the Intercity Plus train which takes an hour longer at a cost of 26.50 euro standard fare (21.60 Amica). There's an ICPlus train at 6:55 am that will get you to Florence at 9:38 am and allow a full day of sightseeing. There are also regional trains that take about 3 hr 30 min for 15.85 euro.

Venice is a longer trip - about 4 and a half hours on the fast trains at a cost of 56.10 euro at the standard fare or 44.90 euro at the Amica fare. The earliest Eurostar from Rome doesn't arrive in Venice until 11:17 am. You wouldn't have a lot of time in Venice. There are a couple of alternatives though. There's a night train from Roma Termini station at 10:50 pm that arrives in Venice at 5:30 the next morning. You can get a berth for 56.50 euro (45.20 Amica) and sleep through the night on the way there. You could also get a seat on this train for 26.80, but it's much less comfortable and harder to sleep. If you do this, you can take one of the fast trains back to Rome in the evening.

Both are "accessible" but I think it isn't worth at all:
1) The distance is not so short as many strangers think. To Florence it takes 2 hours, to Venice at least 5 hours.
2) Italian trains are frightfully expensive, and in the moment the prices are increasing again. From December the 14th the AV (Alta velocità) will be introduced, which will cost 50% more than Eurostar. The prices you've been told will be no more valable. To Venice, prepare to pay some 80 euros.
3) Both Florence and Venice can't be visited with a day trip. They are wonderful towns with lots of things to see, it would be worth to stay here at least two or three days each.

Sorry but it looks the typical average tourist trip plan "Rome Florence and Venice all inclusive three days... so you'll see EVERYTHING". If you are in Rome, enjoy Rome. One week is hardly enough to discover that wonderful town. Don't waste your time and your money in trains.
Don't try to see "everything", try to see something but the best way.

On a eurostar train the oneway ticket is and it takes 1 hour and 40 min to get to Florence if you leave early in the morning from Rome it is worth to visit the town. Venice is a bit far.

There are different fares if you are a student but you need to contact the italian railways: TRENITALIA here is the home page:

Florence is definitely possible for a day trip. It's about 1 hour 20 minutes by train from Rome for about 20 euro each way. Venice is about 4 hours and costs like 40 euro each way. Go to http://www.italiarail.com/tickets/IR/IR.asp?AFF=TRE to price it for the days you want to travel.
