It would be equiv. to travelling from Washington State to Indiana in the USA. If you're willing to take a plane, you'll be alright.

If you wanted to take the Eurorail then you're looking at a good two to three day trip each way. My advice, if you've got the time is to take the Eurorail so you can see the countryside.

It's about 4 hours from Scotland to Rome by air.

Luckily with Ryan Air you can fly from Glasgow to Rome in about 3 hours...and for not very much either. If you want to fly tomorrow and return Sunday, it's about 250 euro/RT but if you plan ahead it can be much, much less.
