The weather in Rome during summer is uncomfortably hot, temperatures often exceeding 95F (35C) at midday, and Romans tend to close up their businesses during August to take holidays in cooler spots. It gets to about 35° in July and August. Right now it's about 22° I think (haven't left my appartment yet). Before you book a hotel i Rome, do check on their web site if they have air conditioning because a lot of them don't.
