I am living in Italy with my Wife, I do this all the time because I dont have any papers, this is exactly how I do it.

I stay at my house for 2 months and usually 29 days or so. 88-89 days. Then I fly to Malta and stay there for one night, just one night, you must stay one night away, that is all. Then in the morning I fly back and start my 88 days over again.

Its that easy, I have done this about 4 times now. 2 times to Malta, once to Dublin, and once to London.

They have never asked for my "permesso di soggiorno" like one person said. THis involves going to the questura, and waiting in line for nothing, its a waste of time, they dont care. If you dont look like an African they wont give you problems, they assume you have money.

The main thing is that you get a stamp in your passport from another country, like France,Malta, Swizterland and then you can reenter as many times as you want but thier is only 1 problem they ask you if you have permisso de sugirino which is consider to be a work permit but is also just to be able to stay in Italy .
I know I worked and lived in Italy for 13 yrs on the Island of Sicily.

James
I heard that you can just leave the country and then re-enter it within the hour if you want. I'm not positive if that is true, but I'm pretty sure it is.

AndyItalia
if your passport is good you only have to leave the country for 24 hours before re-entry

This is a good question-I hope someone actually gives you a true answer because so far you are getting different time periods. I will see if I can find out the actual answer...

synchronicity915
It depends how long your passport is good for.
