I've been here for about ten years and that hasn't been long enough - there are still lots of things to see & do. It really depends on your interests and exactly what you do while you're here. If all you do is go visit old buildings every single day, that could be a little wearing if you're not all that interested. However, there are thousands of local festivals, trekking and other opportunities to get out into nature, concerts, fashion shows, car museums, sports, beaches and other things to do here to keep you occupied. |

As a first generation Italian American who travels back once or twice a year to be with family, I would guess that the person who told you one week is enough has never stepped foot in Italy. I would tell you that a minimum to do your trip justice the first visit is at least a month. I would also recommend renting a car for parts of the trip, but taking the train for other parts. I would pick up a copy of either Frommers, Fodor's or the lonely planet guide to Italy and read it from cover to cover, so you can decide what is important for you. Also, don't discount visiting the islands. I am Sicilian and there are beautiful places on the island to visit.
Good Luck and enjoy!! |

There's a real problem! To an Italian isn't enough a life to visit Italy. Over 50% of the world monuments are in Italy. So you have to decide where you wanna go, to know how mudh time you need. |

It depends on where you go. If you stay in Milan, a week is perfect, from there you can visit also Pavia, Verona and Turin. If you choose Tuscany, it's better 2 weeks to visit Florence, Pisa, Siena, Populonia and then the Maremma, the sea and even Rome is not so far away. |

I hope that person was kidding!
We go for two weeks at a time, I could probably spend months there. At the least an entire summer. Perhaps a lifetime.
I have been multiple times, and will be back again on May 3. |

A week is certainly not long enough!
Keep in mind that the European countries tend to have more sights, history, and culture than the new world countries. Italy has more than its fair share of all of the above.
To do justice to some of its regions, from my own experience, I'd recommend the following:
Perhaps a week split between Milan and Turin, with a day trip to some towns.
4 or 5 days in Venice itself.
One week to see the *highlights* of Tuscany (4 days in Florence, 1 day each in Sienna, Lucca, and Pisa)
To do justice to Rome (and the Vatican) I would recommend at least 10 days.
7-10 days in Naples, the surrounding archeology sites, the Amalfi coast and Capri.
At least 10 days in Sicily.
Those are just the most popular tourist destinations. Italy has a LOT more to offer. for example: the regions of Puglia, Umbria, Abruzzo, Emilia-Romagna, and the cities of Genoa, Trieste, Urbino. |
