it takes the whole day... it's really big, it's a small city...

i live about 100 kms form pompeii and i have now been twice and not seen it all... also some days not all the ruins are open.. there is a restaurant inside but it's best to take a panino and some small bottles of water.
there are water fountains dotted around the ruins so you can always get water..
word of warning don't go in august as it is blistering hot, it can be 40°C and not enjoyable at all, i recommend going in may or september when it's not too hot,
another word of warning the stall holders outside the ruins are expensive and will charge tourists who cannot speak italian alot more... my wife is italian and soon put one man right when we bought a battery for our camera, he halved the price..
while you are in napoli visit herculaneum and castellammare-di-stabia other sites destroyed by the eruption in AD79...
enjoy the sites just becareful in napoli it can be a dangerous place... |

I have to agree with Sabrina, Herculaneum is well worth a visit, and a lot more things to see, Pompeii is a bit "Rambling" takes a long while to get round, A word of WARNING! I had my pocket picked on the train from Naples to Pompeii so take care!, I saw the guys who picked my pocket, but they were far to HARD for me to tackle! they work in teams! |

You think and worry too much about things. Stop planning to the nth degree and enjoy yourself. Take a sandwich if you're that concerned my overly-cautious fellow. |

When I went it was part of a bus tour and it was so short I was feeling rather annoyed when we had to leave. If I go again I would lay aside the best part of the whole day - it's just not somewhere you can nip around - you want to take your time so you can soak up the whole atmosphere and really put your imagination to work. So much to see!
There was a cafe, if memory serves me right. I think I only bought water since we'd already hed a meal.
Fantastic place. Absolutely amazing to stand in some of the ruins and imagine all that went on. The murals that remains are amazing and the pottery, etc that was preserved is outstanding for its time. The roads, even one way systems, are still evident..I could go on! It is just the trip of a lifetime so take time to enjoy it.
Maybe get some more info from these sites.

If you are more concerned about eating and drinking, when visiting Pompeii, you should stay at home! |

I got to Pompeii at 10:00am and stayed until they closed and threw me out at 6:00pm. I only stopped once for lunch all day, and was on the move the entire time. And guess what? I only saw half of the place. (The whole western half.)
Its really huge, and you'll need to spend as much time as possible to see all of it. Next time I go, I'll see the other half.
There is an expensive cafeteria inside the ancient Forum Baths that sells greasy food. I'd take my own food if time allowed me to go shopping beforehand.
And I agree with other answerers ... Herculaneum is smaller and more interesting than Pompeii. |

i guess it depepnds on how enthusiastic you are about these things i was there all day, but you could see the main sites in half a day. There are a number of places to eat inside varying in poshness and price. but none are cheap. dont miss herculanium as well. it is in my opinion far more interesting and much smaller |

One day was recommeded to me by a woman who had excavated there but if you are not obsessive or an archaeologist or both half a day might well do it with the other half spent on the volcano - I would be shocked and stunned if there were not a murder of food vendors and resturants. |
