How many days - Rome and Naples? |
I'm traveling to Italy for two weeks mid-April, the latter half (5 nights) of which I plan to spend between Rome and Naples. Can you recommend how many days I should spend in each? I've tentatively planned three days/nights in Rome and two in Naples, but I'd really like to see Capri and Pompeii/Herculaneum and possibly the Amalfi Coast, as well as all the stuff in the center of Naples. Any advice? Additional Details also, I've been to rome before (about five years ago though), so I've seen a few things there. I could opt out of Siena and spend three days each in Rome and Naples - how great is Siena? |

Siena is a greaat place to visit, but you have to set your own prioroties based on your interests. It's further out of the way in the opposite direction from Naples & the Amalfi Coast. You'd be able to spend more of your time exploring and less in transit if you stick to Rome &/or Naples.
Pompeii/Herculaneum and Capri could each easily occupy a day and are easy trips from Naples. Given that you've already seen Rome, you'll want at least three days for Naples. If you also want to spend a day exploring Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, then you'd want a day to allocate to that.
Note that mid-April is Easter time here. Travel is heavy during that period and many trains will require mandatory reservations. |

Hi,
answer coming directly from Italy: I'm from Rome and I worked here as a tourist guide in Rome and Pompeii.
Consider that Rome has some main well-known attractions, but you could opt to spend more time in visiting less-known things.
But considering as well that the weather should be lovely in that period, I would suggest to enjoy open-air places, rather than spend too much time in close museums or within cathedrals.
----Rush pro gramme:
2 days for Pompeii,Herculaneum+Naples and Amalfi Coast
2 days in Rome
1 day in Siena
---Normal programme:
1 day in Pompei,Herculaneum
3 days in Rome
1 day in Siena
Hints:
- Once you're in Siena, you can visit it in less than a day
- Rome and Naples are well connected trought fast rail, whereas going to Pompei,Herculaneum, Amalfi and Siena would require to rent a car or -in order to save time and pass trough italian traffic jam (if you can afford it)- an "NCC" (rent car, driver included). Consider always reffered agencies for this option.
- Amalfi coast in that period during the weekend (fri eve-->sat eve) will probably be jammed of traffic, and it could be annoying driving over there. Drivers in that place are too much "relaxed" in terms of driving rules, even for us Italians :-)
- Considering that usually a trip like this would require much more time, try to get informed about things that you're going to see in advance: understanding them means enjoy them (elseway you will just give them a mere glance and pass away). The more you understand, the more you enjoy |

I live near Naples and I'd say that if you want to visit "only Naples" in 3 days you will see nothing!
If you want to really visit Naples you need at least 5 days! Then if you want to visit also Amalfi, Capri, Sorrento, Ercolano, Caserta (the famous royal palace http://www.comuni-italiani.it/imco/061/022/reggia.jpg ), Pompei.... eheh
In Naples there are some places you must visit:
- All the castles / royal palace /...
- Museums
- Seafront
- The centre of the city: do you like narrow streets? well, in Naples you'll find much of them :)

Siena is not large, but is great. The trouble is that it's not served by the high speed train, I fear. Maybe is better to keep it for an other trip of Tuscany.
By personal experience if you go to Naples you need one entire day for the Museo Nazionale and one to just walk around.
Amalfi is a must see, I would advise for the bus trip going and the boat trip return, so you can see the coast. I agree with the other that already gave an answer every island (Capri or Ischia) requires a day, at least. With my wife we opted for Ischia and found it very nice.
What we did not see in this trip was Caserta, but we go every year twice in Italy so what we don't see in one occasion we se in another.
My advice would be include Caserta. If you fly from Rome Napoli, Caserta, Rome. if you fly from Naples Rome Caserta Naples. |

Hi! I'm Italian! I live in Rome and it's fantastic! You should visit Rome for three days because there are some place not so famous, but really beautyful. However if you have been to Rome before you should visit her for two days and Naples for three.
Pompeii and Herculaneum (Ercolano in italian) are wonderful and the Amalfi Coast to; but the center off Naples isn't really interesting.
Siena is cute, but Florence is more beautyful than it.
I hope that you will follow my suggestions...
And sorry for the eventual grammatical errors... Bye |

It's very little time for so much to see. You need a full day just for Capri. It's complicated you have to get on the boat and go to the Grotta azzurra with another little boat. The same with Pompei and Ercolano it's a daily trip. Anyway, if you have to choose just go to Pompei they look the same. In Rome it's crucial the hotel location. Stay far from the main railway station Termini. Stay close to Prati and the Vatic, there are some safety issues there. Visit the Vatic Museum, San Pietro and the Colosseum For 30 euros by a double decker bus tour the yellow or red one. It's easy and much safer than going by regular bus |

Three days is a minimum to see Rome and you can do Naples and Pompeii in 2 days. However, I wonder about the rest of your travel plans? Do you have to be back in Rome on the 5th day? You'll be spending a whole day packing, traveling to Naples, unpacking then doing it again to go back to Rome.
I think you'd do better if you chose either Naples or Rome and spent 5 days there. |

if you want to see naples, pompeii, the islands and the coast too, two days are not enough, you'll need four days, but you only have five. anyway, if you stay two days you won't see all those things, sorry! |
