How many days do I need to explore Rome? Florence?

I just got back from Rome, except for a day trip to Pompei and Sorrento, we spent 5 days there. It wasn't enough for us.

It depends on what you are interested in we spent parts of 3 days at the Vatican. Spent time at the Villa Borghese museum.

But you can see the Spanish steps, Trevi fountain, pantheon, colosseum, Roman forum, piazza navonna all in a day.

If you are Catholic, I would alot two days including wednesday the papal audience day. If not one day to see the Basillica, sistene chapel, and recommend the cupola of St. Peters.

Being a intermediately practicing catholic, I was not prepared for my interest in the beauty of the churches of Rome. The history and ornate beauty is amazing.

If you are efficient you can do it in 5 full days. Rick Steves book on Rome was a huge help especially while there.

Uhm...In Rome not less than 5 days...
In Florence...4 days should be ok
In Pisa 2-3 days are perfect

note that pisa is not very distant to florence, you can make a tour to see rome, pisa, florence (or florence, pisa, rome)

italy is my favorite place in the world, and rome is my favorite city! take a week in rome if you can. there is so much to see and experience and you may not be able to take it all in without getting totally numb to the history and art. florence is smaller and a little less overwhelming, so 3 or 4 days would definitely be sufficient. the leaning tower of pisa is neat to see but very touristy (good luck getting a pic without people in it) but you would only need an afternoon there, and if you have to use the toilet there, be prepared to buy something! enjoy!!

Personally, I would recommend 3 to 4 days in Rome and 2 to 3 in Florence as a minimum. You won't see absolutely everything, but you'll be able to see the major attractions without being rushed. There are good day trips available from either city. From Rome, you could spend a day in Pompeii, Capri, Tivoli, Orvietto, Perugia, ... all are worth a visit.

Pisa is worth a trip to see the tower, but don't spend the day there. Hop back on the train and go to Lucca for the rest of the day (25 minutes). This is what I do whenever there are visitors here that want to see the Leaning Tower. Pisa is a nice city, but there's a lot more to see and do in Lucca. Other good day trips from Florence include Siena, San Gemignano, and Arezzo.
