2 days is really enough. i was recently there, i arrived in the evening, stayed teo nights and two days, and took the night train out, and i was definitely ready to leave after that. venice is cool to see, and everyone should, but it is insanely expensive for food, coffee, wine, whatever. i did pretty much every major sight in 2 days - san marco, the doge palace, the accademia, i frari church, the scuola rocco, the city museum, the archiology museum, the guggenheim, and the jewish ghetto. i even made it out to the beach at lido. i didn't rush the sights, i took plenty of time in each of them, got audioguides, the whole 9. and, i still had plenty of cafe time and walking time, and did some shopping. 2 days is definitely plenty of time.
add to that, there seemed to be two types of food in venice - terrible, and terribly expensive. i didn't have a single decent meal while there because i went moderate, and that still cost like 17-25 euro. plus, there is nothing, and i mean nothing to do at night. every bar or cafe that i would pass by after 10 p.m. would have maybe 2 people in them, if that.
finally, because the venetian economy is basically 100% based on tourism, everybody is trying to sell you something, to the point where many restaurants have some type of huckster trying to draw you in.
that said, italy as a whole is my favorite place to visit, and i have nothing but good things to say about florence, rome, and sienna. better food, better prices, and more to do, both museum/church-wise and nightlife-wise. venice is definitely worth two days, but spend your extra time elsewhere in the country. even a day in a "lesser light" like padua or varona beats an extra day or two in venice. |

3 days are more than enough. I got bored in 2 days as the water really stinks, and there are only a couple of museums to visit. |

It really depends on how much you can afford and how's your acceptability to stay in one place.
Ask yourself:
Are you going to any other places in Italy? or What's my time frame of stay in Italy? (because Florence, Rome, and Pisa are great destination as well, but they take time to see and to get to.)
How about cost? or How much can I spend? (because Venice is the most expensive city-less Milan's fashion-in Rome)
How much walking do you want to do? (because cars aren't allowed in the city, so you'll be walking a lot)
I was in Venice for 2 days. I would have stayed for 3 days max. It's a great city, romantic, and very interested to stroll through, but expensive.
If you have the time and money, 4 days. If you're on an itinerary like me, 2-3 days so you can see Florence and Rome during Spring Break Vacation. |

Three days should be sufficient. I stayed a day and a half and really wanted more time. |

As much as you can, but be aware that an espresso will cost you around 5 Euros, where in every normal bar in Italy it would cost you 0.80 cents!
So, stay enough to not get ruined (or get a loan). |
