I wonder which regions are missing according to Domedweller2 and what is the 21st region according to Charly... or, simply, I wonder which Italy they mean.
In the Italy where I live, the one in Europe and in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, there are 20 regions:
1) Valle d'Aosta
2) Piemonte
3) Liguria
4) Lombardia
5) Trentino Alto Adige
6) Veneto
7) Friuli-Venezia Giulia
8) Emilia-Romagna
9) Toscana
10) Umbria
11) Marche
12) Lazio
13) Abruzzo
14) Molise
15) Campania
16) Puglia
17) Basilicata
18) Calabria
19) Sicilia
20) Sardegna
As for your main questions, how many subgroups Italy has, the answer is: one.
Italian citizens are not divided into subgroups, unless you want take into account the division that comes from an historical racist prejudice of those who live in northern Italy (and think they are better simply because they live above Rome) against those who live in southern Italy, often referred to with derogatory names and offensive adjectives.
Article 3 of the Italian Constitution states:
"All citizens have equal social dignity and are equal before law, regardless of sex, ethnicity, language, religion, political opinions, social and economic conditions.
It's duty of the Republic to remove those social and economic obstacles that, limiting the freedom and equality of citizens, are an obstacle to the full developement of the human person and to the effective participation of all workers to the political, economical and social organization of the Country".
The only possible division of the persons living in Italy is between italian citizens and foreigners. |

There are two main subgroups in Italy, the northerners and the southerners.
The north has more industries and attracts many southerners who find work there.
There are 17 regions each with their own dialect and costums.
As in every society there are fringe groups that truly hate each other, but for the most part the conflicts are limited to bragging about soccer teams, food or politics. |
