How much do you think it would cost to go to italy?

my boyfriend is being deployed to iraq early next year. he will be gone for 12 months and when he gets back, i want to surprise him with a trip to italy. i was thinking rome, venice, and florence for about 2 weeks (maybe longer if there's a lot we wanna do/see). i know airfare is gonna be insane no matter what (probably between $2,000 and $2,500), but airfare aside, once we got to italy how much do you think it would cost to do that? i figure i've got about 2 years to save up for it. thanks for your help and any suggestions!

it depends by the periods...
and where do u live!!
the flight from NYC cost somethin' like 600€ with alitalia (942$)
and calculate the return 1884$, 4 two person=3760$
then u have to calculate the hotels (medium 3 stars in city center of rome 120/240€ (188/376$) a night 4 a double room. 4 two weeks (13 nights) it makes 2444/4888$.
i suggest u to move between rome florence and venice by train (it cost less and trains are quick) and it will cost u rome-to-florence-to-venice-to-rome 4 two person
cost 392/450$ + food for two a day 40/80€ (62/125$) for 12 days 744/1500$.
museums and actractives 80€/125$

flights=3760$
hotels=2444/4888$
others=1261/2075$

total=7465/10723$

P.S.
I'm italian, from rome.

Shop around for good deals and it will be cheaper then you think. I just spent two weeks in Italy, including room and flight it was 2700. Then I brought 2000 spending money and still came home with 500.

Okay so this is what I would do:

Fly somewhere into Germany with:
www.abctravel.de

I use this travel agency a lot. From Ohio the tickets are usually about 600 dollars a piece.

Within Europe use: ( Frankfurt Hahn airport)
www.ryanair.com

This is the cheapest way. I live in Germany and my relatives are coming in October, 2 tickets are costing a little under 1200. Our tickets to Rome (thru Ryan Air) are 167 euro for all three, that round trip. You can also fly from Rome to Venice Treviso aiport.
On the ryanair websit you can book tours hotels, anything you want really. I went to Venice for 5 nights and with hotel and travel I spent about 1000, of course I drove, but the tickets on the above mentioned site will only be abouot 100 euro for the 2 of you. I also went in with the mind set that I'm going to Italy to enjoy it, not to be in a hotel, so I choose a cheapo B&B. But I know what it's like when your soldier is gone...you all might be all about the hotel. :) I haven't been to Rome yet, BUT Venice is very expensive, after food and water boat travel and the mainland transportation we spent 3000 in just 5 days....

Have so much fun and enjoy cause it's def worth it!!!

added: you can also go on the aaa website or to your local aaa and get an international drivers license, if you want that experience. Of course gas cost about 1.50 euro a liter which I think ends up costin about 8 or 10 dollars a gallon. But you get to see the country side as your driving, it was beautiful on the way from Germany to Venice! Plus we are stationed here so we got to hit the post gas stations I don't think you guys woud be able to because of customs rules, and you would only be on leave on here, not on orders.

can be excpensive but budget airlines to agood job .once you are there live like the locals lovely friendly people

Don't go with Alitalia. lol...just don't. They're actually bankrupt...would you trust a bankrupt company (who is being kept afloat by huge government subsidies) to fly you across the Atlantic?! I WOULDN'T!!!! And their service is disgusting...

Try British Airways or a US airline

Hi there....1st of all...congratulations...It's a great idea...

My 1st tip would be...Start saving about 150-200 Euros per month...and buy the EUROS...every month...it's getting more expensive...then...

Plan to go in April or May...before the crazy tourist crowds swarm Italy...You'll have good weather...(a few showers, but not too bad) and hotels should be about 30% less..or the early fall...September...October...

Airfare should not be too expensive...for the 2 of you round trip could be about 1,800 USD if you buy in advance...say 4 months before your trip.

Once you are there....take the train...you can get the train pass for Italy...check online for prices...about 3 months before leaving...and buy it online...it's mailed to you...and you'll save a bunch...

Lonely planet ITALY guide is great for tips on how to stay in not too expensive ..and eat well without spending 70 EUROS.

I would reccomend you to have between 3200 EUROS and 4000 EUROS + your round trip airfare + the train pass.

FYI...Those are the 3 most expensive cities in Italy...but also the most beautiful.....you could also discover smaller cities like Verona, Treviso, Vicenza, Padova, Sienna and enjoy Italy as much.

Enjoy and get a big piggy bank.

PS. On top of that ....get a 500 - 1 000 EURO credit card...just to get those souvenirs and dinners thet will be
in your memories for ever...

You are going too need about $3500 plus airfare for 2 weeks. That should cover your hotel, food and transportation. If you can be frugal you can save some of that for a romantic ride in a Venitian gondola (70 euros).
