I found a March 2007 trip:
14 days round-trip airfare (JFK-Rome 3/9/07-3/23/07), 5 star local hotels, in Rome for around $5,500 for 2 people including taxes!!

I am a travel agent and we use several vacation package companies such as Apple Vacations, Travel Impressions, Rockwell Tours & Priceline Vacations.

If you want to look its very easy to find a few deals. The price mainly is determined by your taste and when you want to travel.

Please visit the link below email me. I would be glad to help any way I can.

Good Luck on your search!

when we went in march, here is an estimate of the costs. 2 flights from houston to rome were $1300 . renting a villa for the week $450. car rental was $400. we spent probably another 300 euros on gifts and stuff. another 200 euros for tickets into places. another 60 euros for food each day. tolls on the autostrada were around 200 euros and gas was around 250 euros for the week.

obviously, this is based on our vacation choices of driving everywhere and staying at one place all week. we chose to visit rome, florence, naples, mt. vesuvius, pompeii, and the umbrian countryside and villages. also, going in early march made things a bit cheaper than top tourist season.

one way to start working an idea of costs is to figure out where you want to go and what you want to see. also, how do you want to get around. taking the train instead of car from city to city will change your costs some. also, do you want 5 star hotels and fancy restaurants? our trip was very easy and trying to do more "local" things. we ate at hole in the wall places and stayed 2 hours out of rome in the countryside. for us, this was a perfect vacation. for you, it could be completely differeny. :) best of luck planning!
