A cab can cost you quite a bit. When I visited Rome last year I booked a shuttle transfer in advance for about US$16 one-way (per person) from Fiumicino (Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport). You can also get private car transfers from either Fiumicino or Ciampino for about US$18 one-way (per person). I would do it again because it was less stressful to know that a car was waiting for me. |

IF you find an honest taxi driver it's about 30-35 euro from Ciampino Airport and 40-45 euro from Fiumicino to the city center.
From Ciampino you can take Terravision shuttle to Termini Station. Fiumicino has the Leonardo Express train to Termini. If you arrive after a long transAtlantic flight I would opt to arrange private transportation ahead of time. The last thing you will want to worry about is a shady taxi driver or figuring out the trains. Some taxi drivers will put their meters on a higher rate and some will drive you all over the place before taking you to your hotel. Door-to-door service is worth the 55-70 euro price. As your hotel to arrange a car for you. |

? Rome has TWO airports! One is relatively near -- Ciampino, and is connected to the main ring road (GRA). The other is much bigger but much further away (Leonardo da Vinci/ Fiumicino) which although it has it's own exit from the GRA, you would be advised to take the train to John Paul II (used to be called Termini). You can do this using the machines which have an English Language button.
PS Rome is odd in that it really does not have a centre per se -- unlike most cities, Rome's centre is all archaeology!
You need to know what you mean by "into town" and which airport. The taxi fare is nothing to worry about from Ciampino, so don't sweat it. They take plastic in Italy.
[Edit]
Because Ciampino International is the main airport by all the Budget European Airlines, it is incredibly busy and you will have to wait in a massive queue for the white cabs -- and because it is so near to "Centro" a lot depends on rush-hour traffic on the GRA versus your arrival time. Think of Rome as a massive donut with the ruins in the middle. Everyone lives around it, all the nightlife and offices are round it. As a guide, to get to John-Paul II (Termini) will cost about £20/€35 which is pretty much the same as any European city for the same distance. But costs will escalate if you have to go around the GRA any distance -- the worst case being heading North (the airports are south), oh and if you can figure out the buses, then good luck to ya! You have to buy a ticket from a shop and it's valid for a set time, like 20 mins -- so you can't hang about... you get the ticket punched when you're on board. It is cheaper than a cab, but you will have to have a reasonable grasp of the language and the patience of a saint (and very few bags)! lol![/Edit] |

Well its always good if you catch the local buses to central rome
because a taxi trip from Rome international airport to the town will cost you:
30-40 euros ($38-$50)
its always better to use public transport (such as metros, buses, trams) in Europe, because! the taxi will charge you 5-10 times more than the public transport prices.
good luck! :) |

Taxi is expensive in Rome. They may charge 30 - 40 Euros for a ride between FCO (Leonardo Davinci Intl. Airport) and Roma Termini. The best option is train. There is a direct train between FCO and Roma Termini. The Rly station is inside the Airport bldg. The ticket ccost is 9.50 euros. It is a non-stop train. There is anothrt train departs from the same terminal. It does not go to the City centre. If you take that train you have to change the train at Trastevere. Ticket costs only 5 euros. If you are a first timer take the direct train. From Roma Termini you get buses for all directions. |
