between rome and florence, the price was around 2-3 euros for the small and it worked its way up from there. the best flavor was the tiramisu or a rich chocolate. but everyone has something different they like. i appreciated that they let you sample before a final decision.
and as for all the food we had (pizza and pasta), it did taste different from the type in north america (at least texas). we had pizza every day for lunch and it tasted and was prepared different in each place, whether in different places in one city or city to city. the pasta sauce was different tasting, too. but everything was really tasty and we stayed within our comfort zones for food. the one thing that puzzled us was the lack of lasagna and chicken parmigan (sp?). we saw it in ver few places and that was mostly near really touristy sites. |

Depends where you go. Common flavors are pistacchio, chocolate, stracciatella which is vanilla with chocolate pieces, strawberry, hazelnut, zabaglione which is a kind of custard/liquor flavor, lemon. Just to make your mouth watery here is a picture of gelato flavors.. |

Il gelato or ice cream have several prices, (In Milan my area )you pay between 1.50 euro is the gelato is a commercial vending machine, the quality is really bad so the flavor, kind of MADE IN IN CHINA,
But there are places like piazza Garibaldi were I used to buy my gelatos ogni giorno (every day) and in one gelateria the cost for two scopes is 3 euros in the other gelateria 2 euros, fragola e sempre ilpiu populare anche il tiramisu (strawberry, chocolate, napolitan) there is a huge selection but yes the flavor is better than the usual USA ice cream I admit it.
In Monza (The city) the price is a little bit high but the size is also bigger. 4 or 5 euros. |

I think you can find cheaper ice cream if you stay away from the main tourist places. I wouldn't pay more than a buck fifty for a scoop. Try bacio, it's hazelnut and chocolate and very good. Straciatella (chocolate chip) is good too. |

Three to five Euros unless you get a small cone. The flavors I liked were tiramisu, apple, coconut, and either chocolate or raspberry cream. I don't know what's popular. Generally, you'll see people with three or more different kinds of gelato on a big cone. |

Oh Gelato...my favorite part about Italy. Gelato is a very unique dish and is very different from what Americans call Ice Cream. My favorite flavor is Stracciatella (chocolate chip) pronounced strah-chah-TELL-ah, and I also love Dulce de Leche (caramel). The prices for gelato are extremelly varied, as are the flavors offered. Generally when you are walking around a city you can see a thousand different flavors and prices and when you see one that you are satisfied with, you can stop and get some. I believe that I remembered you asking for prices to the Accademia museum to see the David, and so I must tell you the best place to get Gelato in Firenze. In Piazza della Signoria (the busiest piazza in town, and trust me you'll see it) is the Loggia dei Lanzi, and it is a covered outdoor museum with some very famous sculptures including the "Rape of the Sabines". When you stand on the steps of the Loggia and face the opposite side of the piazza you will see the shop on the left hand corner of the side opposite. The road that runs straight out of the piazza is also the fastest way the the Duomo (Santa Maria dei Fiori). I looked for the street name and I couldn't get it. Also, in case you make it to Rome. The best Gelato shop there is on via della Rotunda, to the right of the Pantheon. It is about the third shop in. They have strange hours, so I hope that you can make it. These two Gelaterie (Gelateria is Italian for Gelato Shop) are positively the best Gelato in Italy! Good luck and enjoy! Taste whatever you can! |
