How much spending money needed for 5 days in Rome ? |
We are going to Rome for 5 days the last week on Nov. We have booked a hotel breakfast included therefore will be eating lunch on the move and dinner at the cheaper restaurants (if there is such a thing in Rome) and participating in a few alcohol beverages at night. We intend doing all the tourist things as well. We have received mixed reports on how expensive Rome is. Please advise how much spending money 2 adults should take for 5 days in Rome - Sterling £££££ |

The cheapest you could get away with is around €50 a day. That way, if you only spend €30 one day, you can then have €70 on another day. Try to spend as little as possible, then buy something nice at the end of your visit with what you have left, like a souvenir, a book or whatever.
A cheap way of seeing museums is to find the ones that have entry to multiple museums on the one ticket. Eg. for €11 you get into the Forum, Colosseum and Palatine Hill, valid for 2 or 3 days, (I can't remember which.) The Capitolino also has several museums for the one ticket.
Rome is an easy city to do very cheaply, you just have to be clever and not go blindly into any 'tourist traps'. And walking everywhere also helps keep costs down, and lets you see so much more of the city. Its a very small city, so you don't need to use the Metro or the buses - just the Metro to visit the Vatican. |

I would budget 60 Euro per day for your basic needs (shopping not included). If you figure you are likely to spend around 10 Euro to enter into some kind of museum or to see the ancient city, etc, that will leave you 50 Euro or so for food, drink, bus tickets, etc per day.
Tips: Save at lunch time by having "pizza a taglio" (pizza by the slice) and a drink. If you get hungry mid afternoon, gelato is a must. Save the real meal, your euros, and your appetite, for dinner. A nice dinner in a typical Roman restaurant can be had for about 20-30 Euro per person including wine. |

This may or may not work for you, but it works great for me... I figure 1 day salary for each day of vacation. If I made £300 a day, I'd budget £1,500 for 5 days of vacation.
Some cities are more expensive than others - use the price of a known hotel chain to be your guide.. Le Meridien, Hilton, Hyatt... whatever. Look at the regular price for the last city you stayed in, and compare the price for the same hotel in the new location. If it is the same, use the same factor... if it is 25% more, up everything by 25%. |
