How should an american female dress in Italy? |
Hi.
I'm a female in her late 20s going to Italy with another female friend in early July. We are going to be in Milan, Venice, Florence & Rome. What I'm wondering is, what kinds of outfits will we be able to get away with? Is it appropriate to wear a tank top and short shorts? How about a low cut top? What do the natives wear? |

You can wear those things, but as woman that has traveled your exact route, I would warn against it...unless you are looking to get laid lol. I wore normal business or casual attire and was accosted everywhere, including inside Vatican City. I would dress sexy but a little bit conservative, because as fun as it sounds to be be stalked by European males, it gets old and tiresome after about day 4. Bring a variety of clothes.
Oh, and you can't wear those clothes in Vatican City or other churches...you will have to dress really conservatively (no tank, halter, sleeveless tops or short-shorts).
Have fun! Italy is fabulous!! |

i went to Italy a couple years ago and everyone dresses the same way we do back here in the states and i'm in high school.
the girls in Italy where the same clothes we do, tank tops, short shorts, you name it.
you won't stand out from the rest of the italians.
some of those girls wear tops showing half their stomach and that's normal over there.
i hope you enjoy your trip. |

You can wear anything you want. A lot of the natives dress the same we do here. Just make sure that if you are visiting a church or any other relegious place that you don't wear tank tops, short shorts, mini skirts, halter, etc. If you do they won't let you in or you'll have to find something to cover yourself! |

Don't worry, unlike some stereotypes, Italy's not a "catholic Country" :)
All kind of dress you mention are appropriate, women/girls in Italy wear a variety of garments; the only real recent "fashion" is to show one's belly button :)
If you take a suntan on a beach, you'll see topless is commonly accepted.
So, unless you're going inside a church, just have fun! |
