Venice (Italian: Venezia, Venetian: Venezsia) is a city in northern Italy, the capital of region Veneto, and has a population of 271,251 (census estimate January 1, 2004). Together with Padua, the city is included in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area (population 1,600,000). Venice has been known as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Bridges", and "The City of Light". The city stretches across 118 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers. The population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; around 62,000 in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the Mainland), mostly in the large frazione of Mestre and Marghera; and 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon.

The Venetian Republic was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain and spice trade) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century.

the buildings are not built on water,but on large woodern spikes that are driven into the sand banks in the lagoon.
you forget that this is so,when you are walking around the city,exploring the alleyways...
when you visit the doges palace,there is a model of the palace showing the spikes underneath and how the building was constructed.

The people who lived in the area now called Venezia got tired of being raided by Barbarians so they moved out to small islands out in the lagoon where Venice is now. Being in a lagoon with a river running in one direction and the tide coming from another the people who lived there were frequently swamped. (Venice still floods just about every Spring, but they can deal with it). To bolster the sides of the islands they pounded in trees as pilings and then built upon them. What worked out well for them was when they pounded the wood into the mud it made a good seal that preserved the pilings for hundreds of years.

Slowly though, the city is sinking. One of the hotels I stayed at the floor drooped about 6 inches in the middle. No matter where you dropped a marble, you could always find it in the middle of the room. Many buildings have elaborate leveling systems underneath them that they adjust periodically to keep the building level.

this city is not standing on water completely. the houses are built on land as usual. but instead of roads there are canals. these canals may be the backwaters of some sea . for more info open up an encyclopedia or visit the online wikipedia encyclopedia.
