Hi, there is a hostel right in venice off the the grand canal, but it is very booked up (often you have to book it three to six months in advance (really). Also, sometimes people do not realize that venice is an island. It is very easy and cheap to just stay nearby and take the boats there (they run like buses) or the train. If you stay on the mainland it is only about five or ten minutes to venice.

the "camping" options are pretty cool, but it doesnt mean you stay in a tent! you can book rooms there and it is where most young student travelers go, so there is alot of fun and good times at both the main "camps" .

In any case, there is a page for venice area hostels with a map to give you an idea of what I am talking about and has the specifics for the options I have mentioned. link is below.

Happy travels.

In my opinion, all lodging is pretty much cheap no matter where you go (watch out for the rats, they are just as big as the cats, no kidding).

Hello I'm italian and I know that your best bet is find a hotel right out side of Venezia.....Mestre is a beautiful city only 20 min. away from Venice and you can get a Albergo or Penzione reasonable cheap.
Good luck!
