You can take the train: in Pompei there is the train station named "pompei stazione centrale". then you arrive in "Roma stazione centrale"

From Termini station, take a train to Napoli (Naples). There are a few trains per day. Be sure to take an express train, because the journey can take between 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on how many stops the train has to make.
From Naples, buy a ticket on the Circumvesuviana train (like a tram) and this will take you to Pompeii. I think the Circumvesuviana leaves Napoli Central every half hour. Try climbing Vesuvius, visiting the Pompeii ruins and there is another city in ruins, but I forget the name... begins with H.

renting a car in Italy is very cheap. About 40 Euro a day for a comfortable car. It's only about a 1 hour drive from Rome on easy to drive AutoStrada. Drive to Napoli ( lots of signs) Once outside ofnapoli look for sign to Pompei. It's real easy, even if you don't know alot of Italian. the trains are a pain. Lots and Lots of smelly people, very cramped, and it's real easy to miss your destination. I lived in Italy (Sicily ) for three years. I drove to Pompei, Rome, Milan, Firenze, etc, etc. It's much more of an adventure, plus you can stop and grab breaks to sightsee on the way. There is alot see in the countryside along the way. Have fun no matter how you go.

As far as I am concerned Pompeii is opened in dec/jan. From Rome you need to go to Naples (2-4hours by train) which is close to Pompeii. Have been there in summer. Beautiful place, you won't regret it. xxx

There is a train station very near to Pompeii. Sorry can't remember when it is called but you could check this on the net. Try to go on your own steam. If you go on a tour you don't get to see as much. We have been to Pompeii twice both times on tours. The first was a half day and when we went back we decided to do the full days tour to see more but were very disappointed as the full day tour was only about an hour and a half longer than the half.

I would take the train, I wish I'd done that! Whatever you do, don't sign up for one of the bus tours. That's what I did when I went to Rome and I only got 2 1/2 hours in Pompeii.

When we visited Rome last year, we had quite an adventure getting to Pompeii. You have to be careful which train you take so make sure you know your Italian language enough to ask questions at the ticket counter of Termini station in Rome. There is a direct Circumvesuviana train (about 2.20 euro one-way and not covered by rail passes!) Make sure you're on the Naples-Sorrento train line. Get off at the Pompei Scavi, Villa dei Misteri stop. From the train station, turn right and walk down the road about a block to the entrance (first left turn). The TI (tourist information stop) is father down the street if you need it. Now, if you take one of the regular trains to Pompeii (which you can use your rail passes with) "without" getting the Naples-Sorrento train line, you'll probably end up in Salerno first, and then have to double back around to the Pompeii station. If you do it this way, it is QUITE a haul (about a 25-30 minute walk) to the Pompeii entrance from the Pompeii station. You can take a bus to and from BUT, you MUST buy your tickets beforehand. This part was very confusing for us. We were told we needed to buy our bus tickets at an earlier train stop (either in Salerno or Rome) which made no sense to me but then again, my Italian translations are terrible :) But, however you get there, this is what I recommend. Pompeii is HUGE and I mean HUGE. You'll need at least TWO days to see it all, and I highly recommend you stay the night in Pompeii. You can also take a bus to the rim of Mt. Vesuvius...very exciting!! Make sure you get a very good book, I recommend anything by Rick Steves because he was very accurate and his descriptions and suggestions on what to see made our trip to Italy the most amazing trip of our lives. Hi, I'm from Naples, half an hour from Pompeii. You have to take a train from Rome, and there is a train every hour from Rome to Naples, it takes you just 2 hours!! Then you have to take a bus or another train, and it takes you half an hour. I suggest you to stop and visit Naples that is another beautiful city too... Have a good time in Italy! Bye!
