I suggest getting a tourist visa (probably before you leave your home country) and then looking for work upon arrival in Italy. Your employer will then need to sponser you for a work visa, and you'll also need to prove that the work you're doing could not possibly be done by an EU national. This means you must be highly skilled and specialized in your area of work.
